Benign prostatic hyperplasia, cancers of the prostate, kidney, ureter,
bladder, penis, and testis, urolithiasis, erectile dysfunction, incontinence,
pediatric urological problems, urinary infection, and genitourinary trauma
are conditions that are encountered commonly by the urologist. Advances
in diagnosis and treatment, including new technologies, and
progress in research on the molecular mechanisms governing disease
behavior and outcome are occurring at a rapid pace. The meeting presents
a forum for practitioners to remain current in state of the art diagnosis
and treatment of these conditions and for researchers to share
laboratory data to promote the advancement of basic science in the
field of urology.
Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this Section meeting, participants should be able to:
- Identify the basic mechanisms and the latest advancements, as they relate to urology, in the area of tissue-engineering and
stem cell research
- Evaluate the current and evolving treatments of cancer of the
prostate, bladder, kidney, and penis
- Evaluate and discuss treatment options for PSA recurrence
following radical prostatectomy for clinically localized prostate
cancer
- Assess the risks/benefits of testosterone use after definitive
treatment for prostate cancer
- Describe the utility of minimally invasive/laparoscopic approaches
to urologic malignancies and the future use of these
approaches in urology
- Report on socioeconomic issues identified by the AUA
- Explain the controversies surrounding early penile rehabilitation
following radical prostatectomy

San Diego
The destination for the 87th Annual Conference of the South Central Section
of the AUA is San Diego,
California’s second largest city. Where
blue skies keep watch on 70 miles of
beaches and a gentle Mediterranean
climate begs for a day of everything
and nothing. Bordered by Mexico, the
Pacific Ocean, the Anza-Borrego Desert and the Laguna Mountains,
San Diego County’s 4,200 square miles offer immense options for business and pleasure.
The beach is more than a boundary dividing land from sea, more
than a place to swim or sunbathe. In San Diego, the beach is a way
of life, a source of pride and joy, a defining influence in people’s
lives. For some, the mere memory of a mid-summer sunset melting
into the Pacific is reward enough. Others have a more intimate relationship
with the sea: surfing and sailing, biking and running, swimming
and diving along San Diego’s many coastal beaches and bays.
Evening Functions
One ticket to each evening function is included in your registration
fee.

USS Midway VIP Tour
Friday, September 19, 2008
2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Today guests will enjoy a VIP
tour of the USS Midway,
the newest addition to San
Diego’s naval history. Having
the distinction of being the
first carrier to be named after
a WWII battle, the USS
Midway was launched in
1945 and had a long and prestigious
career in the US
Navy, being reconfigured
from a straight deck carrier to an angled deck carrier in 1955. In her
47-year history, the Midway participated in actions from the Korean
War, Vietnam to Operation Desert Storm. She was decommissioned
for the last time at North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego in
1992. Learn today what the Midway Magic is all about.
The tour will be led by Scott McGaugh, author of Midway Magic.
For the past eight years, Scott McGaugh has played an active role in
the campaign to bring the USS Midway to San Diego as a permanent
museum, visitor attraction and education center. He’s researched
the history of CV-41, interviewing more than 300 crewmen, from
war-scarred “plankowners” who took USS Midway to sea in 1945 to
the teenagers who launched F/A-18 Hornets in Desert Storm.
After the private VIP tour guests will have time to explore the museum
on their own. There are 54 different areas of the ship to visit
including a new area they are calling “Officer’s Country”. This area
of the ship includes areas such fire stations, a laundry room, The Brig
(jail), Quarters, a Kitchen, and Dining Halls. Officer’s Country can be
visited during the VIP presentation by Scott McGaugh if the group is
fewer than 17 guests or guests are free to visit this area on their
self-guided tour.
Cost: $107.00 per person (includes admission to the USS Midway,
VIP tour of the Flight Desk and Hangar Bar (approximately 45
minutes – 1 hour), tour of the museum on own (approximately 1½
hours) and transportation)
