President’s Message
Dear Members and Guests of the South Central Section,
Mark S. Austenfeld, MDThe 87th meeting of the South Central Section of the American Urological Association is scheduled to take
place at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Diego, California from Wednesday, September 17, 2008 to
Saturday, September 20, 2008.
The Program Committee under the direction of Dr. Brantley Thrasher has put together an excellent scientific
program. The invited Presidential Speaker this year is Dr. Ralph Clayman, who will discuss the past and
future of Urological Minimally Invasive Surgery. Dr. Anthony Atala will give us an update on Tissue
Engineering and Stem Cells in Urology. We will continue this year to have in-depth presentations and
discussions on selected relevant topics in urology. Drs. Ian Thompson, Jean deKernion and Paul Maroni
will compare options of therapy in Treatment of the Margin Positive Patient after Radical Prostatectomy. We
have two point counter-point sessions on Testosterone Use After Definitive Treatment for Prostate Cancer
and Penile Rehabilitation after Radical Prostatectomy. Dr. Jeff Kaufman will give us a timely update on
legislative and socioeconomic topics. One hundred forty-four abstracts and T-Leon Howard Imaging cases
were submitted on a wide range of topics of interest to all urologists. From these the committee has selected
91 high quality papers for podium, poster or T-Leon Howard case presentations.
The Manchester Grand Hyatt is an elegant hotel situated perfectly on the beautiful San Diego harbor and
within walking distance of the historic downtown Gaslamp Quarter. San Diego weather in September is outstanding and allows for great outdoor activities and tours. On Wednesday, the welcoming reception will remain on site with wine tasting in the
exhibition hall. Thursday’s activity is a Jewels by the Sea tour of nearby La Jolla. There will be beautiful views of the ocean, shopping and lunch.
That evening the theme night dinner will be at Miramar, a working Marine Air Station. Guests will dine in the actual Officers Club with some of the
active duty pilots! On Friday, optional tours include scenic Balboa Park, followed by a VIP tour of the recently retired naval aircraft carrier, the USS
Midway. On Saturday, visit the famous San Diego Zoo as a guest Zoo Keeper for the Day. This year’s sports activities include tennis at the
Manchester’s facility or golf at nearby Maderas Country Club.
Jennifer and I are very excited about this year’s program and activities arrangements. We would like to personally extend an enthusiastic welcome
to you and your family to join us in San Diego. If we can answer any questions for you or help in any way please let us know.
