President’s Message

Dear Colleagues,

Our meeting this year will take place at the spectacular and almost brand new JW Marriot Hill Country Resort in the San Antonio hill country. It is an amazing place. If you bring your families along, I can almost guarantee they will have fun. With the help of the program committee, Dr. Randall Meacham, our program director this year and our current president-elect, has put together an equally spectacular meeting featuring a nice balance of socioeconomic lectures, which have particular relevance to healthcare reform as it is currently envisioned, and a tremendous scientific program. I have to tell you that the abstracts submitted and accepted for this meeting just keep getting better and better. Dr. David
Swanson will be on hand to introduce our Presidential Speaker, Dr. Von Eschenbach, who as you all know is a recent former director of the National Cancer Institute and Commissioner of the FDA. He will explore the crossroads of healthcare reform and our biomedical revolution. This should be a lecture of interest to all attendees of the meeting and their spouses. We also have some outstanding scientific guest speakers for what should be some great point counter point sessions and lectures. The theme night at the Knibbe Ranch should also be a highlight of the meeting. Sheila and I look forward to seeing you all there this fall.

San Antonio

The destination for the 90 th Annual Meeting of the South Central Section of the AUA is San Antonio, Texas. One of America's oldest cities, San Antonio was colonized by the Spanish empire in the early 1700s. Rich layers of this and other cultures give the city its distinction. Native Americans, Colonial Spain, the Canary Islands, Old Mexico, Germans, the Wild West, and the Deep South cross paths in San Antonio. Stroll along the River Walk, shop in Mexican markets, explore subterranean caves, visit a wild animal preserve or mingle with real cowboys at a dude ranch. The Hill Country, which starts on San Antonio's doorstep, is one of the country's premiere outdoor adventure areas. San Antonio also has over 40 greens to tee off from and a full scoreboard of professional teams. For a more laid-back approach to the city, dine al fresco at the bistros and cafes that line the river. I n September, when the meeting will take place, the average high is 90 ° F and the average low is 73 ° F, so expect lots of warmth and sunshine!

Cruisin’ and Explorin’ San Antonio

Time: 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.(Bus departs from JW Marriott at 8:30 a.m.)

Cost: $55.00 per person (Includes transpiration and guided Riverboat tour)

To begin the tour, you will be escorted to the shops of La Villita. Located in the rustic, limestone plaza, these historically significant buildings have been moved to re-create a small village, La Villita. These buildings are home to a variety of specialty shops, galleries, jewelers and a candle maker. Our tour guide will share the significance of the buildings in telling our rich story and guests will have time to shop. Next you will have the opportunity to experience the river on a privately chartered river cruiser. Our barge captain will provide historical and entertaining commentary as we pass through the pages of San Antonio history.

You will enjoy a stop at San Fernando Cathedral, which has always been at the center of San Antonio. It is a special place that occupies a unique position in this city and for the many visitors who come by the thousands every year. From its founding on March 9, 1731 by a group of 15 families who came from the Canary Islands at the invitation of King Phillip V of Spain, the church has grown to over 5,000 weekly participants at Mass.

A wonderful blending of the old and new in San Antonio is evident as we travel by the Ursuline Academy/Southwest School of Art and Craft. One of the only remaining evidences of our French heritage can be seen in the French gothic style of the Ursuline Academy established in 1851 by French Ursuline nuns on the banks of the San Antonio River. It has now become a center for art and craft and is truly a gem in our city.

You will disembark at the Paseo del Alamo, an architecturally interesting walkway which connects the river, known as the lifeblood of the city to the Alamo, its true heart. Our tour guide will point out the Alamo Cenataph, a marvelous sculpture by Pompeo Copini as a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by the Alamo heroes, the Alamo and take you through the lobby of the historic Menger Hotel as we wrap up the tour.

The River Experience
The River Bluff Water Experience offers six acres of heated pools, fountains, waterfalls, rivers, and an abundance of poolside lounges to soak in the sun. Adults can relax and enjoy the views while listening to the waterfall created by the infinity edge along one side of the adult leisure pool or from the adjacent adult whirlpool. The zero-depth beach entry provides easy access for guests to cool off in the 262,000 gallon leisure pool. The leisure pool's size allows guests ample room to swim in water from 0” – 4’ water depth, and provides numerous bench locations to sit in the cool water while still taking in the sun's rays. Overlooking the leisure pool area is the Grand Cabana Terrace, an expansive raised patio, perfect for celebrations or enjoying the beauty of the Texas Hill Country terrain. Sun worshippers will be pleased with the generous deck space surrounding the oversized leisure pool. Grab a tube and enjoy the 1200 foot lazy river! This is a perfect opportunity for guests to take a leisurely float around the grand cabana and leisure pool deck areas. Guests can ascend the Water Tower adjacent to the children’s pool to access the Acequia Tube Slides. At the 35’ high start platform, guests will not only have a great view of the surrounding landscape and Water Experience, but also a view of the twists and turns associated with the two 275 foot long Acequia Tube Slides. The Pedernales River is an innovative and very unique custom water ride experience. Utilizing lower gradients and higher volumes of water, the slide is very similar to a natural river. The hydraulic dynamics of the Pedernales slide produces a fast moving, powerful ride experience that literally carries rider and tubes from one curve into the next. Created for activity and child’s play, the Children’s Pool area features a zero depth beach entry pool with two kiddie slides (4’ ht and 6’ ht. above the water) and multiple spray activities to provide hours of enjoyment. From this area, guests can interact with others floating along rapids river ride. The rapids river ride is 350 feet in length and features multiple areas of water "interaction." Guests on the deck above are aiming the Water Blaster to hit targets which activate the moving mechanical parts and water sprays along the rapid river’s edge. Guests along the children’s pool, with good site lines into the river, will take delight in pumping the detonators and helping to cause the water excitement in the rapid river below. The River Bluff Water Experience Pools are comfortably heated to a delightful 82 degrees year round and are open 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. daily. Water attractions are open, weather permitting.
